The History of Ibadan part 22: Origin of Oja’ba ; Is it Oja Oba or Oja Iba

Several things that happened during the time of Iba Oluyole is the reason why Oja’ba became a Big Market as it is today. Oja’ba was named after Iba Oluyole.

It is also known as Oja Basorun or Oja Iba which was shortened to Oja’ba but not Oja-Oba as a lot of people think.

It was during his time that the city wall of Ibadan shifted further than it was before and Ibadan automatically became bigger due to that achievement.

The city wall (Odi Ilu) of Ibadan started from the back of Ile Iyalode beside Oja Iba, that was where the first wall started and it continued that way to Alekuso till its ends at Orita Kure.

During the time of Oluyole, The city wall of Ibadan shifted forward and it was reconstructed. The second city wall elongated till down Baale Olugbode’s house (Isale Baale Olugbode) across Odo Elegun (Elegun river).

The present city wall was mounted and constructed during the time of baale Olugbode.
